What Is the Maryland Concealed Carry Permit?
A maryland concealed carry permit — issued by Maryland State Police as a Wear and Carry Permit — is what legally allows you to carry a concealed handgun in public, whether openly visible or fully concealed under a jacket or bag. It's a different license from the HQL: the Handgun Qualification License only lets you purchase a handgun, while this permit lets you carry one outside your home. Most applicants complete our course, submit their application through the MSP portal, and wait for approval before they can legally carry. Understanding this distinction up front saves a lot of confusion later, since the two licenses solve completely different problems — one covers ownership, the other covers carrying in public, and Maryland treats them as entirely separate processes with separate applications.

Maryland Concealed Weapons Permit Requirements
To apply for a maryland concealed weapons permit, you'll generally need to be at least 21 years old, pass a Maryland State Police background check, and have a clean criminal and mental health record under state law. Maryland reviews each application individually, so having your paperwork organized and your training certificate ready can make the review process noticeably smoother. You'll also need to show a "good and substantial reason" for carrying — most commonly personal safety tied to specific circumstances. Completing an approved training course, like ours, is a required part of every application, and the training certificate we issue is what you'll attach to your MSP submission. We keep records of every student's completion, so if your certificate is ever lost before you finish your application, we can help you get a replacement.

How the Maryland CCW Application Works
Once you finish our maryland ccw course, you'll apply through the Maryland State Police online portal, submitting your training certificate along with identifying documentation and fingerprints. There's an application fee set by MSP, and processing typically takes about two months, though it can run longer during periods of high application volume. We walk you through each step after class so the paperwork side feels just as manageable as the training itself, including exactly which forms to expect and where to find them online. Many students tell us the application itself felt more intimidating in theory than it actually was once they had a clear checklist to follow.
Our Maryland CCW Course — What You'll Learn
Getting a concealed carry permit in maryland means more than passing a background check — it means understanding the law and handling a firearm safely and confidently. Our course combines in-depth classroom instruction with hands-on range time so you leave prepared for both the paperwork and the responsibility of carrying, not just one or the other. Carrying a concealed handgun is a serious responsibility, and we treat the training that way from the first hour of class.
Maryland Firearms Law & Self-Defense Rights
Understanding when and how you're legally allowed to use a firearm in self-defense is one of the most important parts of this course. We cover Maryland's specific use-of-force laws, where concealed carry is and isn't permitted, and the legal responsibilities that come with carrying in public. This isn't generic advice — it's Maryland-specific law taught by an instructor who knows the state's requirements inside and out, including recent changes that affect where and how you can carry. Laws around concealed carry shift more often than most people realize, and we make sure our course content reflects the current statute, not an outdated version from years ago.
Live-Fire Marksmanship Training
The range portion of your training toward a maryland concealed handgun permit focuses on real-world carry skills — accurate shooting under time pressure, safe drawing and holstering, and consistent gun handling habits. Our NRA-certified instructor works with you individually, so whether you're brand new or already comfortable at the range, you'll leave with skills that hold up outside the classroom, not just on a controlled firing line. We also cover drawing from concealment specifically, since that's a very different skill from drawing from an open holster at a typical range.
Concealed Carry Maryland — Multi-State Permit Options
Concealed carry maryland permit holders often find their rights don't extend far beyond state lines, since Maryland has limited reciprocity agreements. That's why many of our students add a Florida or Utah non-resident permit after completing training here — both expand where you can legally carry with minimal extra paperwork. Visit our Florida concealed carry page to see how the two pair together, and ask us about scheduling both courses close together to save a trip. Combining a Maryland and a multi-state permit is one of the most common requests we get from students who travel for work or visit family in other states regularly.
Renew Your Maryland Concealed Carry Permit
Your concealed permit maryland license doesn't last forever — Maryland requires renewal every two years. If your permit is coming up for renewal, visit our Maryland CCW Renewal page for class dates and everything you'll need to keep carrying without a lapse in coverage. Renewal classes are shorter than the original course and run most Saturdays in Laurel, MD, and they're taught by the same instructors you'd see in the original CCW course.
Already have your HQL and want to add carry rights? Start with our Maryland HQL class near me page. Coming up for renewal instead of a new permit? Visit our Maryland CCW renewal course page. Want broader reciprocity? Explore our Florida concealed carry — 37 state coverage option, or see our Utah/Virginia multi-state CCW permit for even more states.
