What Is the Maryland Wear and Carry Permit?

The Maryland Wear and Carry Permit — often called a CCW permit — is the state license that allows you to legally carry a concealed handgun in public, beyond just keeping one at home. Our maryland ccw training prepares you for every part of the application: the legal standards, the required documentation, and the training certificate Maryland State Police need to approve your permit. Unlike the HQL, which only covers purchasing a handgun, this permit is what lets you carry it with you day to day, whether that's for personal protection or peace of mind while traveling around the state. Many students come to us already holding an HQL and simply want to add carry rights on top of it.

UPCOMING CLASSES

Maryland CCW Permit Requirements

To qualify for md ccw training and a Maryland Wear and Carry Permit, applicants generally must be at least 21 years old, complete an approved training course like ours, and demonstrate a "good and substantial reason" for carrying — such as personal protection tied to specific circumstances. Maryland State Police also run a full background check as part of the application, reviewing both criminal and mental health history. If your reason for applying isn't clear-cut, we can talk through what documentation tends to strengthen an application before you submit it, based on what we've seen work for past students. Maryland's approval standards have shifted over the past few years, and we stay current on how MSP is actually reviewing applications, not just what the statute says on paper.

How Long Does the Maryland CCW Process Take?

After you complete our ccw permit course, most applicants wait around two months for Maryland State Police to process their Wear and Carry Permit application. Processing times can shift depending on MSP's current caseload, so it's worth applying as soon as you finish training rather than waiting and losing time you didn't need to lose. We'll give you a realistic timeline before you leave class so you know what to expect, along with a checklist of exactly what to submit to MSP and when.

What's Included in Our Maryland CCW Course?

For $299, our maryland ccw training includes everything you need in one class: classroom instruction on Maryland law, hands-on live-fire range time, and guided help with your permit application. There's no need to piece together separate classes or figure out the paperwork alone, and there are no hidden fees added after you book. The price you see is the price you pay, whether you're a first-time applicant or renewing later on. Ammunition, targets, and safety equipment are all included in the price.

Classroom Instruction

In the classroom, we cover Maryland's laws on carrying and using a firearm for self-defense, including when deadly force is legally justified and where you can and can't carry. You'll also learn safe carry practices — how to holster, draw, and handle your firearm responsibly in daily life, not just on the range. This section is designed to make sure you understand your legal responsibilities as clearly as your shooting skills, since a permit only protects you if you know how to use it correctly. We also cover common places where carry is restricted under Maryland law, like schools, courthouses, and government buildings, so you're never caught off guard by a posted restriction.

Live-Fire Range Training

The range portion of md ccw training moves beyond basic marksmanship into real carry-focused skills: drawing safely from a holster, accuracy under time pressure, and safe handling in realistic scenarios. Our NRA-certified instructor walks you through each drill individually, so you're not just shooting — you're building the muscle memory and safety habits that matter most once you're carrying daily, in situations far less controlled than a shooting range. Whether you shoot regularly or haven't held a firearm in years, the range session is paced to your comfort level. We use the same style of holster and carry position most students plan to use day to day, so the training actually transfers to how you'll carry once you're licensed.

Permit Application Assistance

Every ccw permit course at Apex includes guided help with the Maryland State Police online portal — what documents you'll need, how to submit your training certificate, and what to expect while your application is under review. We won't leave you to figure out the paperwork alone after class ends, and you can always call us if a question comes up weeks later while your application is still processing.

Multi-State Carry — Where Can You Carry?

A Maryland permit alone doesn't cover every state, which is why many of our maryland ccw training students go on to add a Florida or Utah non-resident permit for broader reciprocity. Both options are popular add-ons for Maryland residents who travel frequently and want their concealed carry rights to follow them across more state lines — see our Florida concealed carry course for details on combining courses and saving on training time. Adding a second permit is often far faster the second time around, since much of the paperwork and range requirements overlap, and you'll already know exactly what to expect from the classroom and range portions.
